Let’s Make Some Garden Accents!
Talk about a do-over! This garden wasn’t really a blank canvas until we ripped out shrubs, weeds, bamboo and ivy!
Because the architectural façade of this house is flat, we decided to add lots of hardscaping and garden accents. The stacked stonewalls add great texture to the front and were made level so the downhill slope to the right was less noticeable.
The trellis gives the eye a break from parked cars and serves as a structure for the pink and yellow trumpet coral flowers and purple clematis.
We turned a little shed into a cottage with power washing, paint, black shutters and a window box.
We redirected some drainage, upgraded a window well near a basement window and completed an unfinished picket fence.
Plants include:
- Roses, lavender and classic boxwoods for the front,
- Little gem magnolias, hydrangeas, and flowering shrubs and perennials for the back sunny areas,
- Under a mature dogwood tree we started planting a woodland perennial space with ferns, hostas and hellebores. There is also another curving stone stacked wall that hugs this woodland bed.
Now we just let the plants get fat, the stone more weathered and the trellis covered with flowers. All that waiting is free!
